 "Bridging the Gap" Summer Bootcamp

Interested in bioscience business, but don’t know where to start? Consider applying for a scholarship to attend the “Bridging the Gap” Bioscience Management Bootcamp. Thanks to generous funding from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, the Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences (KGI) will invite up to 40 current PhD students and postdocs to attend a two week summer bootcamp in bioscience management.

KGI’s “Bridging the Gap” Summer bootcamp from July 8th to July 20th 2013, will introduce PhD scientists to available career options and the culture and infrastructure of life science companies through MBA style case-based teaching, career-oriented professional development workshops, and an intensive team-based project. Participants will learn about the organization and strategy of companies within the life science business, as well as processes by which scientific discoveries move from the bench to market. Participants will learn how to leverage their PhD skill set to develop a career in the bioscience industries, including how to identify which positions and corporate cultures best match their individuals skills and interests, secure and excel at interviews, and benefit from participating in professional networks.

Participants in the bootcamp will spend two weeks fully enmeshed in the culture and organization of the bioscience industries. Each day will include a variety of sessions focused on formal management training, professional development, and a team-based project.

1. Short course on bioscience management.
Introductory lectures and MBA-style business cases designed to teach participants knowledge surrounding the organizational structures, business strategy, and financing of bioscience companies.

2. Career-oriented workshops.
These will include hands-on workshops in networking, writing effective resumes, and applying for jobs. In addition, KGI will draw from its extensive corporate advisory and alumni network to organize career oriented panels designed to introduce participants to career opportunities in research, clinical and regulatory affairs, and a variety of management roles within the bioscience industries.

3. Team-based project.
Teams of 4-5 participants will be assigned an industrial science project to gain experience in team work, project management, and project presentation to strengthen participants’ analytic and business communication skills. Project assignments will cover commercialization aspects of a novel life science product and will include marketing analysis, clinical assessment, market research, and competitive analysis.

Scholarships/funding
All students accepted into the program will receive free housing for the two week program within the nearby Claremont College dorms. The program will also include daily lunches, continental breakfasts, and two dinners. All participants will receive a $400 honorarium to cover travel costs to KGI and additional meals. Students will be responsible for all additional expenses exceeding these $400 dollars. No tuition fee is charged.

Who should apply?
The bootcamp is designed for postdocs and late stage PhD students. Individuals with a variety of life science backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
